Alphagan P Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Brimonidine tartrate

ALPHAGAN® P (brimonidine tartrate ophthalmic solution) is a medication in the form of an eye drop and it is used to lower the pressure inside your eyes, also known as intraocular pressure (IOP). ALPHAGAN® P is a reformulation of an older medication known as ALPHAGAN® (brimonidine tartrate ophthalmic solution). This medication is used to treat open-angle glaucoma. This medication lowers pressure by providing better fluid drainage from within the eye. It is also known as alpha agonist.

Alphagan P Dosage

• For adults and children 2 years of age and older, usual dose is 1 drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times daily, approximately 8 hours apart.
• For children less than 2 years of age, the use and dose must be determined by your doctor.

Uses of Alphagan P

• Alphagan is used to lowers the amount of fluid inside your eyes and it also helps the eyes drain fluid more effectively.
• It is also used to treat open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
• You can also used this medication for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Alphagan P

If you are using alphagan, then discuss the side effects of alphagan with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor may determine that it is safe to continue using Alphagan P. Side effects may include:

• Abnormal vision
• allergic reaction
• blurred vision
• burning and stinging
• dizziness
• drowsiness
• dry eyes
• dry mouth
• eye pain or irritation
• fatigue
• feeling of foreign body in the eye
• headache
• inflamed or swollen eyelids
• itchy eyes
• loss of tissue or staining of the cornea

Warnings and precautions before taking Alphagan P:

• If you have any allergies or if you are allergic to it, then tell your doctor or pharmacist before using this medication.
• Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history such as including blood vessel diseases, blood circulation disorders, depression, severe heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, Raynaud's disease, low blood pressure upon standing.
• After taking this medication, you may feel some sleepy or this drug may make you dizzy, drowsy, or it may cause blurred vision. So use this medication with caution and do not perform any activities where you require allertness such as includes driving or using machinery.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with alphagan P, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of alphagan and it may also cause to another serious effects. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Alphagan P with the following:

• Tricyclic antidepressant drugs such as Sinequan, Surmontil, and
• Barbiturates such as phenobarbital and Seconal
• medications Inderal, Sectral, and Tenormin
  
• Other sleep medications such as Ambien and Sonata
  
• Narcotic painkillers such as Darvon, Percodan, and Vicodin
• Heart drugs such as Isordil, Lanoxin, and Nitro-Dur
  
• Drugs classified as beta blockers, such as the high blood pressure
• Vivactil
  
• Other high blood pressure drugs
  

Overdose

No information is available on Alphagan P overdose. But after using this medication if you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may cause to another serious effects. This medication may be harmful if swallowed.
