Lanoxin Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Digoxin

DIGOXIN (Lanoxin®, Lanoxicaps®) is a cardiac glycoside, it may help a weakened heart to function properly. It increases the strength of the heart muscle, and helps to remove excess water from the body. Digoxin can reduce the symptoms of congestive heart failure, a condition that reduces the ability of the heart to pump enough blood through the body. Symptoms such as include swelling of the feet and legs, difficulty breathing, and extreme tiredness or weakness. Lanoxin is usually prescribed along with a water pill and a drug known as ACE inhibitor. It belongs to a class of drugs known as digitalis glycosides. Digoxin is extracted from the leaves of a plant known as digitalis lanata. Lanoxin helps the heart to beat more strongly and regularly.

Lanoxin Dosage

  • In which, your doctor will determine your dosage based on several factors such as includes body weight, your kidney function and other diseases you have or drugs that you are taking.
  • When your doctor feels that you need rapid digitalization, then your first few doses may be given intravenously. After that, You'll then be switched to tablets or capsules for long-term maintenance. A typical maintenance dose may be a 0.125 milligram or 0.25 milligram tablet once daily.

Uses of Lanoxin

  • Lanoxin is used to treat conditions such as includes congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation/atrial flutter.
  • Digoxin is also used to treat heart pain (angina) and may be used after a heart attack.

Side Effects of Lanoxin

If you are taking Lanoxin, then discuss the side effects of Lanoxin with your doctor and if you feel any change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects of Lanoxin may include:

  • Apathy
  • yellow vision
  • blurred vision
  • weakness
  • breast development in males
  • vomiting
  • confusion
  • psychosis
  • diarrhea
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • lower stomach pain
  • headache

Warnings and precautions before taking Lanoxin:

  • If you are allergic to digoxin, digitoxin, or any other drugs, then tell your doctor and pharmacist.
  • If you are taking any prescription and nonprescription medications, especially such as includes antacids, antibiotics, calcium, corticosteroids, diuretics, other medications for heart disease, thyroid medications, and vitamins, then tell your doctor and pharmacist. Because it may cause another serious effects.
  • If you have thyroid problems, heart arrhythmias, cancer, or kidney disease, the tell your doctor and pharmacist.
  • If you are taking Lanoxin, then you may feel drowsy, dizzy or some sleepy. So do not perform any activities where you require more alertness such as including drive a car or operate machinery.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Lanoxin, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Lanoxin. So first consult to your doctor before combining Lanoxin medicine with the following drugs.

  • Airway-opening drugs such as Proventil and Ventolin
  • Water pills such as Lasix
  • Antibiotics such as neomycin, tetracycline, erythromycin, and clarithromycin
  • Beta-blocking blood pressure drugs such as Tenormin and Inderal
  • Thyroid hormones such as Synthroid
  • Calcium (injectable form)
  • Sucralfate (Carafate)
  • Cyclosporine (Sandimmune)
  • Diphenoxylate (Lomotil)
  • Propafenone (Rythmol)
  • Itraconazole (Sporanox)
Overdose

After taking Lanoxin, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Lanoxin overdose may include:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • decreased appetite
  • diarrhea
  • confusion
  • seizures
  • hallucinations
  • light "halos" around objects
  • green or yellow vision
  • fatigue
  • irregular heartbeats
  • abnormally fast or slow heartbeats.
