Pediazole Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Erythromycin ethylsuccinate, Sulfisoxazole acetyl

ERYTHROMYCIN-SULFISOXAZOLE (Eryzole®, Pediazole®) is a combination of two antibiotics medicine used to treat certain types of ear infections. Erythromycin-sulfisoxazole may also be used to treat other types of infections such as includes sinusitis or infections of the upper respiratory tract. Erythromycin and sulfisoxazole works by kill certain bacteria or stop their growth. Erythromycin is also known as a "macrolide" antibiotic and Sulfisoxazole is a "sulfa" antibiotic.

Pediazole Dosage

  • For adults, the usual dosage is 250-400 mg every 6 hours and it should be not exceed to 4g in a 24-hour period.
  • For children, the dosage is 15-25 mg per pound of body weight depending upon the severity of infection.
  • For oral suspension, the starting dose is ½ -2 teaspoon, depending upon body weight and you should take 4 times daily for 10days.

Uses of Pediazole

  • Erythromycin and sulfisoxazole is used to treat many different types of bacterial infections such as includes ear infections.

Side Effects of Pediazole

If you are taking Pediazole, then discuss the side effects of Pediazole with your doctor and if you feel any change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects of Pediazole may include:

  • depression
  • cough
  • bluish discoloration of skin
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • Anxiety
  • blood or stone formation in the urine
  • chills
  • colitis
  • convulsions
  • blood disorders
  • dark
  • diarrhea
  • tarry stools
  • lack or loss of appetite
  • Abdominal pain and discomfort

Warnings and precautions before taking Pediazole:

  • If you have any medical conditions such as includes liver disease, kidney disease, certain type of muscle disease, personal or family history of a certain heart problem, severe allergies, asthma, blood disorders, decreased bone marrow function, then you should tell your doctor, before using this medication.
  • If you will use Pediazole prolonged or repeated use of Pediazole, then it may cause new infections. If your child develops a new infection known as superinfection, talk to your doctor. Because different antibiotic may be needed.
  • If you are taking prescription and nonprescription medications such as includes, anticoagulants such as warfarin, astemizole, carbamazepine, clozapine, cyclosporine, digoxin, disopyramide, ergotamine, felodipine, lovastatin, oral contraceptives, phenytoin, then you tell your doctor.
  • If you are having surgery such as including dental surgery, then tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking erythromycin and sulfisoxazole.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Pediazole, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Pediazole. So first consult to your doctor before combining Pediazole medicine with the following drugs.

  • Astemizole (Hismanal)
  • Triazolam (Halcion)
  • Bromocriptine (Parlodel)
  • Terfenadine (Seldane)
  • Digoxin (Lanoxin)
  • Oral antidiabetic drugs such as Micronase
  • Ergotamine (Cafergot, Ergostat)
  • Lovastatin (Mevacor)
  • Methotrexate (Rheumatrex)
  • Cyclosporine (Sandimmune)
  • Phenytoin (Dilantin)
  • Disopyramide (Norpace)
  • Theophylline (Theo-Dur)
  • Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
  • Blood thinners such as warfarin (Coumadin)
Overdose

After taking Pediazole, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Pediazole overdose may includes:

  • Blood in the urine
  • colic
  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • fever
  • headache
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea
  • unconsciousness
  • vomiting
  • yellowed eyes and skin
