Beclomethasone Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Beconase Inhalation Aerosol

Beclomethasone medication is a synthetic steroid of the glucocorticoid family. In which, the naturally-occurring glucocorticoid is produced in the adrenal glands. It is used to prevent wheezing, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties that may caused by severe asthma and other lung diseases. Beclomethasone is in a class of medications known as corticosteroids. It works by reducing swelling in the airways. Glucocorticoid steroids have potent anti-inflammatory actions. When used as an inhaler, the medication goes directly into the lungs.

Beclomethasone Dosage

  • For adults and children 12 years of age and over, the usual dosage is 2 inhalations taken 3 to 4 times a day. If you have asthma, then your doctor may start your dosage with 12 to 16 inhalations a day.
  • For adults and children 12 years of age and over, the dosage of Vancenase PocketHaler is 1 inhalation in each nostril 2 to 4 times a day.

Uses of Beclomethasone

  • It is used to prevents the release of substances in the body that may cause inflammation.
  • Beclomethasone inhalation is also used to prevent asthma attacks and other conditions such as inflammation of the lung tissues.

Side Effects of Beclomethasone

If you are using beclomethasone, then discuss the side effects of beclomethasone with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor may determine that it is safe to continue using beclomethasone. Side effects may include:

  • Acne
  • agitation
  • allergic reactions
  • breathing problems
  • bruising
  • cataracts
  • chest pain
  • cold sores
  • cough
  • depression
  • dizziness
  • dry mouth
  • ear infections
  • fever
  • fluid retention
  • flu-like symptoms
  • headache
  • hives

Warnings and precautions before taking ABeclomethasone:

  • If you are taking prescription and nonprescription medications especially arthritis medications, aspirin, digoxin, diuretics, estrogen, ketoconazole, oral contraceptives, phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifampin, theophylline, and vitamins, then tell your doctor.
  • If you have any medical problems such as includes liver, kidney, intestinal, or heart disease, diabetes, an underactive thyroid gland, high blood pressure, mental illness, myasthenia gravis, osteoporosis, then tell your doctor before using this medication.
  • If you have fungal infection, then do not use beclomethasone without talking to your doctor.
  • Do not use beclomethasone during a sudden asthma attack. You should use fast-acting inhaler such as albuterol during asthma attacks.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with beclomethasone, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of beclomethasone. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining beclomethasone with the following:

  • furazolidone
  • isocarboxazid
  • linezolid
  • moclobemide
  • phenelzine
  • procarbazine
  • rasagiline
  • selegiline
  • tranylcypromine
Overdose

An overdose of this medication is not likely to be harmful. But after using this medication if you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may cause to another serious effects. This medication may be harmful if swallowed.
