Caverject Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Alprostadil

ALPROSTADIL (Caverject®) is used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, commonly known as impotence. It helps to create and maintain erection. Alprostadil is used to relaxing blood vessels and muscles in the penis and it also increases the amount of blood that flows into the penis and decreases the amount of blood that flows out of the penis, because it may cause an erection. Alprostadil (al-PROS-ta-dil) belongs to a group of medicines known as vasodilators that may increase blood flow by expanding blood vessels. If the medicine is not used properly, then it may permanent damage to the penis and loss of the ability to have erections could result.

Caverject Dosage

• Each man has different dose of caverject, but the usual dose is 1.25 or 2.5 micrograms.
• The dosage range for Edex is 1 to 40 micrograms, given over 5 to 10 seconds.

Uses of Caverject

• It is a prostaglandin (PGE-1) and used to treat impotence.
• It may also be used to diagnose impotence.

Side Effects of Caverject

If you are using caverject, then discuss the side effects of caverject with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects of caverject may include:

• pain in the penis
• Blood-filled swelling at the site of injection
• upper respiratory infection
• disorder of the penis such as includes discoloration of the head, strange feeling, tearing of the skin
• prolonged erection
• hardened tissue in the penis

Warnings and precautions before taking Caverject:

• If you have any medical conditions such as including sickle cell anemia, cancer, leukemia, multiple myeloma, penile implants, an abnormally formed penis, kidney disease, then tell your doctor.
• You should not use this medicine more than once a day and more than three times a week.
• Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding. You should not breast-feed while you are using this medication.
• if you are having surgery such as including dental surgery, then tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking medication.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with caverject, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of caverject. It may cause another serious effects. So discuss with your doctor before combining Clonidine with the following:

• warfarin (Coumadin)
• enoxaparin (Lovenox)
• danaparoid (Orgaran)
• heparin
• dalteparin (Fragmin)
• ardeparin (Normiflo)

Overdose

After taking caverject, if you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of caverject overdose may include:

• prolonged erection
• possibly with damage to the penis
• low blood pressure (facial flushing, dizziness, or fainting).
