Desyrel Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Trazodone hydrochloride

Trazodone ( Desyrel, Trialodine ) is used to treat any type of depression. It is works by changing the actions of chemicals in the brain. Trazodone is an oral antidepressant medicine that affects the chemical messengers within the brain that nerves use to communicate with each other. The major neurotransmitters such as includes are acetylcholine, norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. Depression is cause by imbalance among the different neurotransmitters. Desyrel is the brand name for Trazodone, one of the newer antidepressants. Desyrel helps reduce depression by increasing the amount of serotonin available to the brain. Desyrel is a sedative.

Desyrel Dosage

The usual starting dosage is a total of 150 milligrams per day and you can also take smaller doses by divided into 2 or more. Your doctor may increase your dose by 50 milligrams per day every 3 or 4 days and total dosage should not exceed 400 milligrams per day, divided into smaller doses.

Uses of Desyrel

• Trazodone ( Desyrel, Trialodine ) is used to treat the symptoms of depression such as includes feelings of sadness, worthlessness, or guilt, loss of interest in daily activities, changes in appetite, tiredness, sleeping too much, insomnia.
• It is also used to reduce the symptoms of agoraphobia, drug induced insomnia, essential tremor, repetitive screaming, and some pain syndromes.
• Medication may also be used for relief of symptoms of an anxiety disorder or to treat chronic pain.

Side Effects of Desyrel

If you are using desyrel, then discuss the side effects of desyrel with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects of desyrel may include:

• Abdominal or stomach disorder
• nasal or sinus congestion
• aches or pains in muscles and bones
• low blood pressure
• anger or hostility
• inability to fall or stay asleep
• blurred vision
• headache
• brief loss of consciousness
• fluid retention and swelling
• confusion
• fast or fluttery heartbeat
• fainting
• fatigue
• excitement
• constipation
• decreased appetite
• drowsiness
• diarrhea
• dizziness or light-headedness

Warnings and precautions before taking Desyrel:

• If you have any type of heart disease such as including a past heart attack, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats, or chest pain, do not take desyrel medicine.
• If you have any kind of surgery such as includes dental treatment, or emergency treatment, then tell the medical doctor or dentist in charge that you are using this medicine. If you are taking trazodone together with medicines that are used during surgery or dental or emergency treatments, it may increase the CNS depressant effects.
• After taking this medicine, you may feel some sleepy, drowsy or less alert. So do not perform any activity that requiring alertness such as drive, use machines.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with desyrel, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of desyrel. So discuss with your doctor before combining desyrel with the following:

• Barbiturates such as Seconal
• Warfarin (Coumadin)
• Central nervous system depressants such as Demerol and Halcion
• Phenytoin (Dilantin)
• Chlorpromazine (Thorazine)
• Other antidepressants such as Prozac and Norpramin
• Digoxin (Lanoxin)
• Drugs for high blood pressure such as Catapres and Wytensin

Overdose

After taking desyrel, if you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of a desyrel overdose may include:

• Breathing failure
• drowsiness
• irregular heartbeat
• prolonged
• painful erection
• seizures
• vomiting
