Fiorinal Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Butalbital, Aspirin, Caffeine

ASPIRN-BUTALBITAL-CAFFEINE (Fiorinal® and others) is a combination product and that are used to treat certain types of headaches and migraines. Generic aspirin-butalbital-caffeine tablets and capsules are available. Fiorinal is a combination analgesic medication, that consisting acetylsalicylic acid, the barbiturate butalbital and caffeine. Aspirin is a pain reliever, as well as an anti-inflammatory and a fever reducer. Butalbital is in a class of drugs known as barbiturates that slow down your central nervous system (brain and nerve impulses) and may cause relaxation.

Fiorinal Dosage

  • You should be taken dosage 1 or 2 tablets or capsules every 4 hours and you should not take more than 6 tablets or capsules in a day.
  • For children, Dosage must be determined by your doctor.

Uses of Fiorinal

  • Fiorinal is used to relieve complex tension headaches.
  • Aspirin/butalbital/caffeine may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Fiorinal

If you are using Fiorinal, then discuss the side effects of Fiorinal with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects of Fiorinal may include:

  • Dizziness
  • vomiting
  • drowsiness
  • skin problems
  • Gas
  • nausea
  • light-headedness

Warnings and precautions before taking Fiorinal:

  • If you are an older person or if you are in a weakened condition, then use Fiorinal with caution.
  • If you have any diseases such as includes kidney, liver, or intestinal problems or an enlarged prostate gland, or if you have any head injury, then tell your doctor and used Fiorinal with caution.
  • Be cautious if you have a thyroid problem, blood clotting difficulties, or a urinary disorder.
  • If you are taking nonprescription and prescription medicines, then check the labels of all medicines. If any contain a barbiturate, aspirin, or other salicylates, including diflunisal, then check with your doctor.
  • If you are having any kind of surgery such as including dental surgery or emergency treatment, then tell the medical doctor or dentist in charge that you are taking this medicine. Serious side effects may occur if your medical doctor or dentist gives you certain other medicines without knowing that you have taken butalbital.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Fiorinal, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Fiorinal. Because the combination of drugs may lead to other serious effects. So discuss with your doctor before combining Fiorinal with the following.

  • Acetazolamide (Diamox)
  • Probenecid (Benemid)
  • Beta-blocking blood pressure drugs such as Inderal and Tenormin
  • Oral diabetes drugs such as Micronase
  • Blood-thinning drugs such as Coumadin
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Drugs known as MAO inhibitors, such as the antidepressants Nardil and Parnate
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Naprosyn, Motrin
  • Insulin
  • Narcotic pain relievers such as Darvon and Percocet
  • Methotrexate (Rheumatrex)
  • Mercaptopurine (Purinethol)
Overdose

After taking Fiorinal, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of an Fiorinal overdose include:

  • slow breathing
  • sweating
  • seizures
  • ringing in your ears
  • cold and clammy skin
  • dizziness
  • vomiting
  • nausea
  • weakness
  • small pupils
  • loss of consciousness
  • coma
  • fast heartbeat
  • confusion
  • tiredness
