Flagyl Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Metronidazole

METRONIDAZOLE (Flagyl®) kills or prevents the growth of certain bacteria and protozoa. Metronidazole is used to treat infections. You may also be used for other problems as determined by your doctor. It will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections. Metronidazole is used to treats infections of the skin, central nervous system, bones and joints, respiratory tract, abdomen, gynecologic and vaginal infections, and intestinal infections. Metronidazole is an antibiotic effective against anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites. Anaerobic bacteria are single-cell living organisms that thrive in low oxygen environments and may cause disease in the abdomen (bacterial peritonitis) liver (liver abscess), and pelvis. Giardia lamblia and ameba are parasites that may cause abdominal pain and chronic diarrhea in infected individuals.

Flagyl Dosage

• For one-day treatment, you should be taken dosage 2 grams of Flagyl as a single dose or you can divided into 2 doses (1 gram each) taken in the same day.
• For seven-day course of treatment, the usual dosage is 250 milligrams 3 times daily for 7 consecutive days.
• The usual dose is 750 milligrams taken by mouth 3 times daily for 5 to 10 days.

Uses of Flagyl

• It is used to treat giardia infections of the small intestines, amebic liver abscess and dysentery, trichomonas vaginal infections, and carriers of trichomonas who do not have symptoms of infection.
• You can also used this medicine alone or in combination with other antibiotics in treating abscesses in the liver, pelvis, abdomen and brain that may caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria.
• Flagyl is also used in treating colon infection that may caused by a bacteria called C.difficile.

Side Effects of Flagyl

If you are using Flagyl, then discuss the side effects of Flagyl with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects of Flagyl may include:

• Blood disorders
• inability to hold urine
• confusion
• hives
• dark urine
• furry tongue
• decreased sex drive
• flushing
• depression
• fever
• difficulty sleeping
• dry mouth
• dizziness

Warnings and precautions before taking Flagyl:

• If you have liver disease, then tell your doctor and you should be used Flagyl with caution.
• If you are taking Flagyl medicine, then it may cause some sleepy or othere side effects that could impair your mental or physical ability. So do not perform any activities where you require alertness such as drive or operate machinary.
• You should be avoided alcoholic beverages while taking this medication and for at least 3 days after finishing this medicine because severe stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, headache and flushing may occur.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Flagyl, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Flagyl. Because the combination of drugs may lead to other serious effects. So discuss with your doctor before combining Flagyl with the following:

• Blood thinners such as Coumadin
• Phenytoin (Dilantin)
• Cholestyramine (Questran)
• Phenobarbital
• Cimetidine (Tagamet)
• Lithium (Eskalith)
• Disulfiram (Antabuse)

Overdose

After taking Flagyl, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Flagyl overdose may include:

• Lack of muscle coordination
