Antihypertensive drugs are medicines that help lower blood pressure. All antihypertensive agents are used to lower blood pressure. Within this therapeutic class, there are several subgroups. There are several drugs that are used to control hypertension, and the drugs listed below are representatives.The calcium channel blocking agents, also known as slow channel blockers or you can say calcium antagonists, it inhibit the movement of ionic calcium across the cell membrane. This reduces the force of contraction of heart muscles and arteries. In which, calcium channel blockers are treated as a group, there are four different chemical classes. Nifedipine (Adalat, Procardia) has the greatest effect on the blood vessels, while verapamil (Calan, Isoptin) and diltiazem (Cardizem) have a greater effect on the heart muscle itself.

Guanabenz Acetate Dosage

  • The usual starting dose is 4 milligrams 2 times per day and you can also used guanabenz alone or with a thiazide type of diuretic.
  • Your doctor can increase dosage 4 to 8 milligrams per day every 1 to 2 weeks and it depends on your response.

Uses of Guanabenz Acetate

  • Guanabenz Acetate is an alpha agonist used to treat high blood pressure.

Side Effects of Guanabenz Acetate

Warnings and precautions before taking Guanabenz Acetate:

  • If you are taking Guanabenz Acetate, then after taking you will feel some sleepy, drowsy or less alert. So do not perform any activities where you require more alertness such as driving or operating dangerous machinery or participating in any hazardous activity.
  • If you have heart disease, stroke or related disorders, or severe liver or kidney failure, or if you have recently had a heart attack, then you should be used this drug with caution.
  • You should also this medication in CNS disease, elderly or with other CNS depressants that may cause sedation and drowsiness alone. It may also cause significant orthostasis.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Guanabenz Acetate, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Guanabenz Acetate. So discuss with your doctor before combining Guanabenz Acetate with the following:

  • Antihistamines such as Benadryl, Chlor-Trimeton, and Tavist
  • Drugs that depress the central nervous system such as Halcion, Valium, and phenobarbital
Overdose

After taking Guanabenz Acetate, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of guanabenz overdose may include:

  • Excessive contraction of the pupils
  • irritability
  • low blood pressure
  • sleepiness
  • slow heartbeat
  • sluggishness
