Hytrin Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Ergoloid mesylates, terazosin

Hytrin is used to reduce high blood pressure. You can also used medicine alone or in combination with other blood pressure lowering drugs, such as includes HydroDIURIL (a diuretic) or Inderal, a beta blocker. Terazosin belongs to a class of medications known as alpha 1 blockers, it helps in relaxes the smooth muscles of the arteries, the prostate, and the bladder neck. Other alpha blockers in the same class of drugs such as includes doxazosin (Cardura), alfuzosin (Uroxatral), tamsulosin (Flomax), and prazosin (Minipress). Relaxing the smooth muscles around the bladder neck relieves urinary obstruction caused by an enlarged prostate (prostate hypertrophy).

Hytrin Dosage

  • The usual dosage of hytrin is 1 milligram to 5 milligrams and you should be taken once a day. But, some people may benefit from doses as high as 20 milligrams per day.
  • The starting dose is 1 milligram at bedtime. Your doctor may increase dosage to 10 milligrams, taken once a day, usually for at least 4 to 6 weeks.

Uses of Hytrin

  • Terazosin is used to treat the symptoms of urinary obstruction as a result of an enlarged prostate.
  • Terazosin is also used alone or in combination with another blood pressure medication to treat high blood pressure.

Side Effects of Hytrin

If you are using Hytrin, then discuss the side effects of Hytrin with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects of Hytrin may include:

  • Difficult or labored breathing
  • weakness
  • dizziness
  • swollen wrists and ankles
  • pain in the arms and legs
  • nausea
  • headache
  • stuffy nose
  • heart palpitations
  • sleepiness
  • light-headedness upon standing

Warnings and precautions before taking Hytrin:

  • If you are taking prescription and nonprescription medications, such as includes vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products, then tell your doctor.
  • If you are taking Hytrin medicine then terazosin may make you drowsy or dizzy. So do not perform any activities where you require more alertness such as drive a car or operate machinery.
  • If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding, then tell your doctor. If you become pregnant while taking terazosin, then call your doctor.
  • If you are allergic to terazosin or any other medications, then tell your doctor.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Hytrin, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Hytrin. So discuss with your doctor before combining Hytrin with the following:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory painkillers such as includes Motrin and Naprosyn
  • Other blood pressure medications, such as includes Dyazide, Vasotec, Calan, and Verelan
Overdose

After taking Hytrin, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Hytrin overdose may include:

  • dizziness
  • light-headedness
  • fainting
