Lamisil Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Terbinafine hydrochloride

Lamisil is an antifungal medication. It is act as antibiotic but it is used to treat fungal infections. Terbinafine (ter-BIN-a-feen) belongs to the group of medicines known as antifungals. It is taken by mouth or it can be applied to the skin. Lamisil acts by interfering with the ability of fungi to make chemicals known as sterols that are an important part of the membrane that surrounds fungal cells and holds them together. This weakens the cell membrane. Oral Lamisil is more effective for treating fungal nail infections than griseofulvin and itraconazole. There are two other antifungal agents used for treating fungal nail infections.

Lamisil Dosage

  • For the fungal infection of the fingernails, the usual dosage is 250-milligram tablet once a day and for 6 weeks.
  • For fungal infection of the toenails, the usual dose is 250-milligram tablet once a day for 12 weeks.
  • You may also apply this medicine to the affected and closely surrounding areas twice a day for 1 week.

Uses of Lamisil

  • Lamisil is used to treat fungal infections of the fingernails and toenails.
  • You can also be used for other conditions those listed in this medication guide.
  • It may also used on the skin to treat skin infections such as includes athlete's foot, jock itch or ringworm.

Side Effects of Lamisil

If you are taking Lamisil, then discuss the side effects of Lamisil with your doctor and if you feel any change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects of Lamisil may include:

  • Depression
  • Indigestion (dyspepsia)
  • Disturbances of the gut such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or abdominal pain
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Anxiety
  • Headache
  • Liver disorders
  • Allergic skin reactions such as rash and itch
  • Pins and needles (paraesthesia)
  • Pain in the muscles and joints
  • Fatigue
  • Alteration in taste
  • Blood disorders

Warnings and precautions before taking Lamisil:

  • If you feel any change or develop skin irritation, redness, itching, burning, blistering, swelling, or oozing while using the cream, then tell your doctor. Do not cover the treated area with dressings unless directed by your doctor.
  • You should tell your doctor medical history, especially if you have any allergies.
  • Liver problems may be more likely to occur if you drink alcoholic beverages while you are using this medicine. So, you should not drink alcoholic beverages while you are taking this medicine.
  • Before applying this medicine, first clean and dry the affected area of skin.
  • This medicine is for external use only.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Lamisil, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Lamisil. So first consult to your doctor before combining Lamisil medicine with the following drugs.

  • Antidepressants such as Elavil, Nardil, Norpramin, Pamelor, Parnate, Paxil, Prozac, Tofranil, and Zoloft
  • Cimetidine (Tagamet)
  • Cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune)
  • Drugs classified as beta blockers such as the heart and blood pressure medications Inderal, Sectral, and Tenormin
  • Rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane)
Overdose

After taking Lamisil, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Lamisil overdose may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • dizziness
  • frequent urination
  • headache
  • nausea
  • rash
  • vomiting
