Nicotrol Inhaler Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Nicotine inhalation system

NICOTINE (Nicotrol®) helps people stop smoking. Nicotine inhaler is most effective when you will used it with a supervised stop-smoking program. Nicotine inhaler is use for short periods of time means not more than 3 months. Supervised stop-smoking program such as includes counseling, education, specific behavior change techniques, or support groups. With the inhaler, nicotine is inhaled through the mouth and is absorbed in the mouth and throat, but not in the lungs. In some cases, you can also used Zyban® ( also known as bupropion), a precription medication, together with nicotine to help people stop smoking. But you should only use Zyban® with nicotine if these have been prescribed by your healthcare prescriber.

Nicotrol Inhaler Dosage

  • You should be use at least 6 cartridges a day for the first 3 to 6 weeks.
  • Additional doses may be also needed to control the urge to smoke, up to a maximum of 16 cartridges a day.

  • Nicotine, in an inhaler, is used to help you stop smoking.

Side Effects of Nicotrol Inhaler

If you are using Nicotrol Inhaler, then discuss the side effects of Nicotrol Inhaler with your doctor and if you feel any change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue using Nicotrol Inhaler. Side effects may include:

  • Acid indigestion
  • allergies
  • back pain
  • coughing
  • diarrhea
  • fever
  • flu-like symptoms
  • gas
  • headache
  • hiccups
  • jaw and neck pain

Warnings and precautions before taking Nicotrol Inhaler:

  • You should be avoided smoke during treatment with the nicotine inhaler because of the risk of nicotine overdose.
  • You should not use the nicotine inhaler for longer than 6 months if you have stopped smoking because continuing use of nicotine in any form can be harmful and addictive.
  • Nicotine should not be used in pregnancy. If there is any possibility that you might become pregnant, then you may want to use some type of birth control and If you think you may have become pregnant, stop taking this medicine immediately and check with your doctor.
  • Nicotine products must be kept out of the reach of children and pets.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs. It may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects, when you stop smoking. So first consult to your doctor If you are taking certain drugs.

  • Antidepressants such as Anafranil, Elavil, Norpramin, Pamelor, Sinequan, and Tofranil
  • Theophylline
Overdose

Excessive doses of nicotine may cause severe symptoms. If you suspect an overdose, contact with your doctor immediately.

  • headaches
  • hearing difficulties
  • increased salivation
  • low blood pressure
  • vision problems
  • vomiting
  • weakness
