Nizoral Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Ketoconazole

Ketoconazole is in a class of antifungals known as imidazoles. This medicine is used to treat fungal infections by interfering with their growth and repair mechanisms. Ketoconazole is most often used to treat infections that may also spread to different parts of the body through the bloodstream such as includes infections of the mouth, skin, urinary tract, and blood, and certain fungal infections that begin on the skin or in the lungs and may spread through the body. Ketoconazole is also used to treat fungal infections of the skin or nails that you cannot treat with other medications. It works by slowing the growth of fungi that may cause infection.

Nizoral Dosage

  • The usual starting dose of Nizoral is 200 milligrams daily.
  • But in very serious infections, or if the problem does not clear up within the expected time, the dose of Nizoral may be increased to 400 milligrams (2 tablets) once daily.
  • In small numbers of children over 2 years of age, the usual dose is 3.3 to 6.6 milligrams per 2.2 pounds of body weight.

Uses of Nizoral

  • Ketoconazole is used to treat infections of the mouth, throat, and esophagus; fungal infections throughout the whole body; and serious fungal infections of the skin and nails.
  • Ketoconazole may also be used for other conditions those listed in this medication guide.
  • This medication is also used to control dandruff.

Side Effects of Nizoral

If you are taking Nizoral, then discuss the side effects of Nizoral with your doctor and if you feel any change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Nizoral. Side effects of Nizoral may include:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • abdominal pain
  • diarrhea
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • fatigue
  • itching

Warnings and precautions before taking Nizoral:

  • If you have any allergic to ketoconazole, other antifungal medications such as including fluconazole, itraconazole, or voriconazole, tell your doctor and pharmacist.
  • If you are taking antacids, antihistamines, medications for heartburn or ulcers such as includes cimetidine, famotidine, nizatadine, or ranitidine or medications for irritable bowel disease, motion sickness, then tell your doctor and pharmacist. Because it may cause to another serious effects.
  • If you have any pre-existing conditions, such as includes illnesses, tell your doctor and pharmacist.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Nizoral, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Nizoral. So first consult to your doctor before combining Nizoral medicine with the following drugs.

  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Cisapride (Propulsid)
  • Digoxin (Lanoxin)
  • Isoniazid (Nydrazid)
  • Midazolam (Versed)
  • Phenytoin (Dilantin)
  • Rifampin (Rifadin, Rifamate, and Rimactane)
  • Tacrolimus (Prograf)
  • Triazolam (Halcion)
Overdose

After taking Nizoral, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Nizoral overdose may includes:

  • dizziness
  • ringing in the ears
  • headache
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • abdominal pain
