Ortho Evra Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Ethinyl estradiol, Norelgestromin

Ortho Evra is a contraceptive skin patch. Ortho Evra contains estrogen and progestin and the same hormones also found in many birth control pills. In which, the fertility depends on regular fluctuations in the levels of hormones. Contraceptives such as Ortho Evra reduce fertility by eliminating the fluctuations. When you will apply to the skin, the Ortho Evra patch will releases a steady supply of estrogen and progestin through the skin and then into the bloodstream. The birth control patch is a way to prevent pregnancy. The brand name of the patch is Ortho Evra.

Ortho Evra Dosage

  • You should use three Ortho Evra patches during each 28-day cycle.
  • You should also apply a new patch each week for 3 weeks. You should not apply a patch during the fourth week.

Uses of Ortho Evra

  • Ortho Evra is used to prevent pregnancy.
  • It is also used for other conditions those are listed in the medication guide.

Side Effects of Ortho Evra

If you are taking Ortho Evra, then discuss the side effects of Ortho Evra with your doctor and if you feel any change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue using Ortho Evra. Side effects of Ortho Evra may include:

  • decreased flow of milk when used immediately after birth
  • difficulty breathing
  • appetite changes
  • breast tenderness or enlargement
  • contact lens discomfort
  • bladder infection
  • chest pain
  • bleeding in spots during a menstrual period
  • cataracts
  • bloating
  • blood clots
  • depression
  • Acne

Warnings and precautions before taking Ortho Evra:

  • Hormonal contraceptives such as including Ortho Evra, should be used with caution if you are over 40 years old, and using smoke tobacco,or you have liver, heart, gallbladder, or kidney disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes.
  • If you have blood circulation problems or have had a heart attack or stroke in the past, then you should also used Ortho Evra with caution.
  • If you have problems with depression, migraine or other headaches, irregular menstrual periods, or visual disturbances, then you should tell your doctor and use medicine with caution.
  • Hormonal contraceptives do not protect against HIV infection (AIDS) or any other sexually transmitted disease. If there is a danger of infection, then use a latex condom in addition to Ortho Evra.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Ortho Evra, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Ortho Evra. So first consult to your doctor before combining Ortho Evra medicine with the following drugs.

  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
  • Topamax
  • Prednisolone (Prelone, Pediapred)
  • Barbiturates (phenobarbital, Seconal)
  • Cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune)
  • Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
  • Diabetes drugs such as (Glucotrol)
  • Folic acid
  • Griseofulvin (Fulvicin, Grisactin)
  • Itraconazole (Sporanox)
  • Aspirin
  • Morphine (MS Contin)
Overdose

After taking Ortho Evra, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Ortho Evra overdose may includes:

  • Nausea
  • vomiting
  • vaginal bleeding in females
