Oxycontin Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Oxycodone hydrochloride

OxyContin is in a class of drugs known as narcotic analgesics. It is a pain reliever. OxyContin is a painkiller medicine used for moderate to high pain relief that are associated with several conditions such as including injuries, bursitis, dislocation, fractures, neuralgia, arthritis, lower back pain, and pain associated with cancer.

Oxycontin Dosage

  • You should be taken OxyContin every 12 hours. The tablets come in strengths of 10, 20, 40, 80, and 160 milligrams. The usual dose of OxyContin is determined by your doctor and it depend on your physical condition means the type of painkillers you've been taking, and your tolerance for narcotics.
  • The dose of OxyContin may be increased every 1 or 2 days. If a higher dose has excessive side effects, then doctor will adjust it downward and increase the dosage of supplemental painkillers.

  • Tranquilizers such as Ativan, Librium, Valium, and Xanax
  • Narcotic painkillers such as Demerol, Percodan, and Vicodin
  • Sleep aids such as Ambien, Halcion, and Sonata
  • Sleep-inducing antihistamines such as Benadryl and Phenergan
Overdose

After taking Oxycontin, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Oxycontin overdose may includes:

  • slow breathing
  • small pupils.
  • cold and clammy skin
  • seizures
  • tiredness
  • dizziness
  • confusion
  • weakness
  • loss of consciousness
  • coma
