Peganone Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Ethotoin

ETHOTOIN (Peganone®) medications helps to control seizures (convulsions) in certain types of epilepsy. Ethotoin is also used in combination with another seizure medication. It works by slowing down impulses in the brain that may cause seizures. In seizure disorders, these medicines act on the central nervous system (CNS) to reduce the number and severity of seizures.

Peganone Dosage

• The usual starting dose is 1,000 milligrams or less a day and you should be take this medicine in 4 to 6 divided doses spaced as evenly as possible. The doctor may increase dosage according to your response.
• The usual effective maintenance dose is 2,000 to 3,000 milligrams a day.
• Dosage depends on the child's age and weight. The usual starting dose should not exceed 750 milligrams a day, taken in 4 to 6 divided doses spaced as evenly as possible.

Uses of Peganone

• Peganone medication is used to treat seizures and epilepsy.
• It is also used for other medication those listed in the medication guide.

Side Effects of Peganone

If you are taking Peganone, then discuss the side effects of Peganone with your doctor and if you feel any change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects of Peganone may include:

• vomiting
• diarrhea
• nausea
• double vision
• loss of or impaired muscle coordination
• fever
• gum overgrowth or thickening
• headache
• insomnia
• numbness
• lymph node disease
• fatigue
• involuntary or rapid eye movement
• skin rash
• dizziness
• Chest pain

Warnings and precautions before taking Peganone:

• If you are taking Peganone medicine, then you may feel dizzy, lightheaded, drowsy, or less alert than they are normally. So do not perform any activities where you require more alertness such as include drive or operate any machinery.
• If you have any medical conditions such as includes liver disease, then tell your doctor.
• You should not stop using this medicine without taking your doctor. Because it may cause any problem. So you need to slowly decrease your dose before stopping it completely.
• Use of alcohol and other sedative type medications may lead to extreme drowsiness. So you should be avoided that type of medicine.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Peganone, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Peganone. So first consult to your doctor before combining Peganone medicine with the following drugs.

• Blood-thinning drugs such as Coumadin
• Drugs used to treat blood disorders
• Phenacemide (Phenurone)

Overdose

After taking Peganone, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Peganone overdose may includes:

• Drowsiness
• coma
• loss of or impaired muscle coordination
• at very high doses
• visual disturbance
• nausea
