Soma Medication (Carisoprodol) - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Carisoprodol

Soma is a muscle relaxant. It works by blocking nerve impulses that are sent to your brain. Skeletal muscle relaxants are used to relax certain muscles in your body and relieve the stiffness, pain, and discomfort that may cause by strains, sprains, or other injury to your muscles. Methocarbamol also used to relieve some of the muscle problems that may cause by tetanus. Skeletal muscle relaxants act in the central nervous system (CNS) to produce their muscle relaxant effects.

Soma Dosage

  • The usual dosage of Soma is one 350-milligram tablet and you should be taken 3 times daily and at bedtime.
  • The safety and effectiveness of Soma have not been established in children under 12 years of age.

Uses of Soma

  • Soma is used, along with rest and physical therapy, to treat injuries and other painful muscular conditions.
  • It is also used for other conditions those listed in medication guide.

Side Effects of Soma

If you are using Soma, then discuss the side effects of Soma with your doctor and if you feel any change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects of Soma may include:

  • Agitation
  • depression
  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • facial flushing
  • fainting
  • headache
  • hiccups
  • inability to fall or stay asleep
  • irritability
  • light-headedness upon standing up
  • loss of coordination
  • nausea
  • rapid heart rate
  • stomach upset

Warnings and precautions before taking Soma:

  • If you stop taking soma medicine suddenly then several symptoms occur such as including abdominal cramps, chilliness, headache, insomnia, and nausea.
  • You should take Soma cautiously if you have any kidney or liver problems.
  • If you are taking soma medicine, then after taking you may feel sleepy, dizzy. So do not perform any activities where you require more alertness such as driving or operating machinery.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Soma, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Soma. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Soma with the following:

  • Antidepressant drugs such as Elavil, Tofranil, and Nardil
  • Major tranquilizers such as Haldol, Stelazine, and Thorazine
  • Sedatives such as Nembutal and Halcion
  • Tranquilizers such as Librium, Valium, and Xanax
Overdose

After taking Soma, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Soma overdose may includes:

  • low blood pressure
  • decreased breathing
  • unconsciousness.
