Tenormin Medication (Atenolol) - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Atenolol

ATENOLOL (Tenormin®) belongs to a group of medicines known as beta-blockers. Beta-blockers reduce the workload on the heart and also help it to beat more regularly. Atenolol also used to treat chest pain (angina), and can be helpful after a heart attack. Sometimes atenolol is used to help prevent migraine headaches. You can use this medicine alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure.

Tenormin Dosage

  • For Hypertension treatment, The usual starting dose is 50 milligrams a day in 1 dose, alone or with a diuretic. Dosage may be increased to a maximum of 100 milligrams per day in one dose.
  • For Angina Pectoris treatment, The usual starting dose is 50 milligrams in 1 dose a day. Dosage may be increased to a maximum of 100 milligrams per day. In some cases, a single dose of 200 milligrams per day may be given.

Uses of Tenormin

  • Atenolol is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure.
  • It also is used to prevent angina and treat heart attacks.
  • Atenolol is also used sometimes to prevent migraine headaches and to treat alcohol withdrawal.

Side Effects of Tenormin

If you are using Tenormin, then discuss the side effects of Tenormin with your doctor and if you feel any change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects of Tenormin may include:

  • Dizziness
  • penile
  • fatigue
  • low blood pressure
  • nausea
  • light-headedness
  • slow heartbeat
  • impotence
  • Depression
  • diarrhea
  • headache
  • difficult or labored breathing
  • drowsiness

Warnings and precautions before taking Tenormin:

  • If you are taking prescription and nonprescription medications such as includes calcium channel blockers such as diltiazem and verapamil, clonidine, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as indomethacin and reserpine, tell your doctor and pharmacist.
  • If you have asthma or other lung disease, diabetes, severe allergies, an overactive thyroid gland, then tell your doctor and pharmacist.
  • If you are allergic to atenolol or any other medications, then tell your doctor and pharmacist.
  • You should not be stopped Tenormin suddenly. Because it may cause increased chest pain and heart attack.
  • If you have a history of severe congestive heart failure, then you should be used Tenormin with caution.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Tenormin, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Tenormin. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Tenormin with the following:

  • Ampicillin (Omnipen, others)
  • Calcium-containing antacids such as Tums
  • Clonidine (Catapres)
  • Epinephrine (EpiPen)
  • Indomethacin (Indocin)
  • Insulin
  • Oral diabetes drugs such as Micronase
Overdose

After taking Tenormin, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Tenormin overdose may includes:

  • Congestive heart failure
  • constricted airways
  • low blood pressure
  • low blood sugar
  • slow heartbeat
  • sluggishness
  • wheezing
