Urispas Medication (Flavoxate hydrochloride) - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Flavoxate hydrochloride

FLAVOXATE (Urispas®) helps to treat spasms in the urinary tract or difficult urination, urinary urgency, excessive nighttime urination, pubic area pain, frequency of urination, and inability to hold urine that may cause by urinary tract infections. You can take Urispas in combination with antibiotics to treat the infection. Urispas medicine contains the active ingredient flavoxate hydrochloride, which is a type of medicine known as muscle relaxant and it works by relaxing the involuntary muscle that is found in the wall of the bladder. This muscle can sometimes contract in uncontrollable spasms, and it can cause an increase in the frequency of urination, uncontrollable urges to pass urine, and incontinence.

Urispas Dosage

  • For adults and children over age 12, the usual dose of Urispas is one or two 100-milligram tablets 3 or 4 times a day. When your symptoms have improved, your doctor may reduce the dosage.
  • Safety and effectiveness of Urispas in children under 12 years of age have not been established.

Uses of Urispas

  • It is used to relieve pain, burning, urinary urgency and frequency and other symptoms associated with urinary tract infections, bladder infections and prostate infections.
  • It is also used for other infections those listed in the medication guide.

Side Effects of Urispas

If you are using Urispas, then discuss the side effects of Urispas with your doctor and if you feel any change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Urispas. Side effects of Urispas may include:

  • Allergic skin reactions
  • vomiting
  • including hives
  • vertigo
  • rapid heartbeat
  • blurred vision and vision changes
  • painful or difficult urination
  • drowsiness
  • nervousness
  • dry mouth
  • nausea
  • fluttery heartbeat
  • mental confusion
  • headache
  • high body temperature

Warnings and precautions before taking Urispas:

  • You should be use Urispas cautiously if you have the eye condition known as glaucoma.
  • If you are taking Urispas medicine, then it may cause drowsy. So do not perform any activities that require alertness such as including drive, use machines, or do anything else that could be dangerous if you are not alert.
  • If you have kidney problems, stomach or intestinal disorders, allergies, then tell your doctor.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Urispas, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Urispas. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Urispas with the following:

  • bethanechol
  • cisapride
  • erythromycin
  • metoclopramide
  • tegaserod

Tell your doctor about all other medicines that you are taking such as including nonprescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Do not start taking any medicine without talking with your doctor.

Overdose

After taking Urispas, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Urispas overdose may includes:

  • Convulsions
  • decreased ability to sweat
  • hallucinations
  • increased heart rate and blood pressure
  • mental confusion
