Viagra Drug (Sildenafil citrate) - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Sildenafil citrate

Viagra is an oral drug for male impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction (ED). Viagra works by dilating blood vessels in the penis, and allowing the inflow of blood needed for an erection. Viagra increases the body's ability to achieve and maintain an erection during sexual stimulation. Viagra should be used for the persistent inability to attain or maintain an erection, also know as impotence or sexual dysfunction. The non-trade name for Viagra is sildenafil. Sildenafil is an oral treatment, It is effective as an oral treatment because of its rapid absorption, short half-life, and minimal effect on heart rate and blood pressure.

Viagra Dosage

  • The usual doses range from 25 milligrams to 100 milligrams, depending on the drug's effect. But the usual dose is 50 milligrams.
  • If you are over 65 and you have liver or kidney problems, or are taking erythromycin, ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, or saquinavir, then dose of 25 milligrams may be sufficient.
  • You should take Viagra only before sexual activity. The manufacturer recommends a maximum of 1 dose per day (1 dose every 2 days for those taking ritonavir).

Side Effects of Viagra

If you are using Viagra, then discuss the side effects of Viagra with your doctor and if you feel any change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Viagra. Side effects of Viagra may include:

  • Abnormal vision
  • acid indigestion
  • diarrhea
  • flushing
  • headache
  • nasal congestion
  • urinary tract infection

Warnings and precautions before taking Viagra:

  • Before taking Viagra, you should tell your doctor if you have, stroke, or life-threatening irregular heartbeats within the last six months, heart failure, coronary artery disease, angina, high or low blood pressure, liver problems, kidney problems.
  • If you have heart problems severe enough to make sexual activity a danger, then you should avoid using Viagra.
  • If you have a bleeding disorder, a stomach ulcer, or the inherited eye condition known as retinitis pigmentosa, then you should use this medication with caution.
  • To avoid low blood pressure, then you should not take the 50-milligram or 100-milligram dose of Viagra within 4 hours of taking an alpha-blocking drug such as Cardura.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Viagra, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Viagra. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Viagra with the following:

  • Other impotence remedies including Caverject and Muse
  • Alpha-blockers such as doxazosin (Cardura)
  • Cimetidine (Tagamet)
  • Erythromycin (E-Mycin, Ery-Tab, PCE)
  • Itraconazole (Sporanox)
  • Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
  • Ritonavir (Norvir)
  • Saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase)
Overdose

No overdose of Viagra has been reported. But after taking Viagra, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately.
