Zithromax Medication (Azithromycin) - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Azithromycin

Zithromax is an antibiotic related to erythromycin. It is prescribed for adults to treat certain mild to moderate skin infections such as includes upper and lower respiratory tract infections, including pharyngitis, tonsillitis, worsening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pneumonia. Azithromycin is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic chemically related to erythromycin and clarithromycin (Biaxin).

Zithromax Dosage

  • For Genital Ulcer Disease treatment, the usual dose is a single gram (1,000 milligrams) one time only.
  • For Sexually Transmitted Diseases treatment, the usual dose is a single 2-gram (2,000 milligrams) dose.
  • For the Strep Throat and Tonsillitis, For children aged 2 years and up, the usual dose is 12 milligrams per 2.2 pounds of body weight once daily for 5 days.

Uses of Zithromax

  • Zithromax is used to treat several types of infections that may caused by bacteria such as includes respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted diseases.
  • In children, Zithromax is used to treat middle ear infection, pneumonia, tonsillitis, and strep throat.

Side Effects of Zithromax

If you are using Zithromax, then discuss the side effects of Zithromax with your doctor and if you feel any change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Zithromax. Side effects of Zithromax may include:

  • Blood in the stools
  • chest pain
  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • fatigue
  • gas
  • headache
  • heart palpitations
  • indigestion
  • itching
  • jaundice
  • kidney infection
  • light sensitivity
  • rash

Warnings and precautions before taking Zithromax:

  • You should tell your doctor, before taking azithromycin, if you are allergic to it; or to other macrolide antibiotics such as includes erythromycin, clarithromycin; or if you have any other allergies.
  • Before using this medication, you should tell your doctor medical conditions, especially if you have liver disease, kidney disease.
  • Broad-spectrum antibiotics can sometimes cause inflammation of the bowel (colitis). For this reason, if you get diarrhoea that becomes severe or persistent or contains blood or mucus, either during or after taking this medicine, then you should consult your doctor immediately.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Zithromax, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Zithromax. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Zithromax with the following:

  • Nelfinavir (Viracept)
  • Warfarin (Coumadin)
  • Digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps)
  • Ergot-containing drugs such as Cafergot and D.H.E.
  • Cyclosporine (Neoral and Sandimmune)
  • Hexobarbital
  • Phenytoin (Dilantin)
Overdose

After taking Zithromax, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Zithromax overdose may includes:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • stomach discomfort
